Museum turns ‘worst aquarium ever’ review into sold-out merch

The New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts has turned a blunt one-star Google review calling it the “worst aquarium ever” into one of its best-selling product lines.

The review is technically accurate. The museum, which chronicles the region’s 19th-century whaling industry, holds no live marine life beyond a suspended whale skeleton.

Rather than contest the complaint, its team leaned into it, launching a range of hoodies, t-shirts and tote bags printed with the review itself.

“We do not have live whales here.” confirmed Annelise Conway, the museum’s Chief Engagement Officer.

The merch has sold out multiple times and picked up local news coverage, joining a run of brands putting unfiltered public feedback at the centre of their marketing rather than burying it.

This negative review, seen on Reddit, was up-cycled by a coffee shop.

A CBS news report boosted sales. According to AP customers placed 738 online orders, mostly for “worst aquarium” merchandise, during the broadcast andorders for the week were up 250% compared to the week prior.

It also echoes how brands have turned community ideas into products, treating criticism and creativity alike as raw material rather than risk.

A museum staffer recently wore the hoodie to an actual aquarium, captioning the visit “this is awkward.”

Timing adds an irony of its own. The review dates from when the museum was more whale ossuary than aquarium, but earlier this year it installed a 250-gallon saltwater tank, what McMullen called “a modest aquarium.” Housed on the first floor, it holds local South Coast species including blue crab, Forbes’ sea star and northern puffer fish.

Live whales remain notably absent.

Online reaction has largely sided with the museum, with visitors praising the joke while pointing to its artefact collection and Moby Dick Marathon as proof it delivers well beyond the gag.

The range remains available through the museum’s online store while stock lasts.
