Taco Bell Spain turns the avocado toast myth into rent money

Taco Bell Spain is putting real money behind a joke: buy more guacamole, and it might cover a year of your rent.

To mark the return of its Guacamole Chicken Burrito, the chain has introduced Guacabono, a brand campaign covering up to a year’s rent for customers who buy any menu item containing guacamole and enter the competition.

The idea takes direct aim at one of the internet’s longest-running financial myths: the claim that young people could buy a home if they simply gave up avocado toast.

Spanish Youth Council figures show the scale of the problem. Some 85.5% of 16 to 29 year olds in Spain still live with their families, the highest share since the study began, while renters now hand over 98.7% of their average salary and buyers need close to five years’ income for a deposit.

It’s the brand’s first rent-focused promotion in Spain, created with independent agency Fuego Camina Conmigo, and follows Taco Bell’s free packaging for resellers stunt with Vinted sellers earlier this year.

“The return of our Guacamole Chicken Burrito is one of the moments our fans look forward to most every year. We wanted to celebrate it with something that goes beyond the product itself. Guacabono is our way of giving something meaningful back to the people who enjoy it the most,” said Beltrán Romero de Lecea, marketing manager at Taco Bell Spain.

It’s not the first time a brand has cashed in on the avocado-millennial meme: Virgin Trains once let ticket-buyers swap an avocado for discounts on its 26-30 railcard. Guacabono goes further, putting a year of rent behind the joke rather than a one-off stunt.
