Columbia takes aim at tech billionaires with survival bunker giveaway

Columbia Sportswear is giving away a fully stocked survival bunker in “Don’t Panic Room”, a campaign by adam&eve\TBWA that asks outdoor enthusiasts to prove they have what it takes to survive.

The idea taps into the fascination with Silicon Valley’s escape plans: underground shelters, remote estates and New Zealand boltholes where the ultra-rich hope to ride out catastrophe.

With tech billionaires buying themselves an exit route, Columbia is offering someone else a shot at survival. The entry requirement is outdoor ingenuity rather than a billionaire bank balance.

The prize is a 40ft by 8ft converted shipping container, delivered to the winner and fitted with a bunk bed, kitchen, bathroom, survival supplies and a robotic dog called Rocky.

Columbia puffer jackets come sealed in cans, ready to crack open when the temperature drops.

“Hopefully the winner never needs the ‘Don’t Panic Room,’ but we made sure they’ll be warm and dry if the world does go to sh*t,” said Columbia CEO Tim Boyle.

Boyle fronts the launch film, directed by Benji Weinstein and produced by Smuggler.

The campaign launches on 28 October with a New York Times print ad and billboards across Silicon Valley, putting the joke on its targets’ doorstep.

Entrants can submit videos showcasing their survival skills via Instagram or Columbia’s campaign site until 24 November 2026.

The stunt extends Columbia’s “Engineered for Whatever” platform, turning its promise of weather-ready kit into an absurdly comprehensive prize. It follows the brand’s flat Earth challenge and its hike-to-enter rave in a cave.

Ant Nelson, Chief Creative Officer, adam&eve\TBWA said“When things feel a little unpredictable, what more can you ask for than your very own, fully equipped, 40ft long survival bunker? The ‘Don’t Panic Room’ is the perfect embodiment of Columbia’s brand platform, ‘Engineered For Whatever’, celebrating the ingenuity, irreverence and spirit of adventure that define the brand. Whatever Mother Nature throws at you, it pays to have the right kit.”
