LEGO builds a giant wave from 380,000 flowers in Shanghai

LEGO has turned more than 380,000 hand-built botanical blooms into a giant wave spilling out from Tank Shanghai Art Center onto the city’s West Bund.

Measuring approximately 30 metres long and covering 800 square metres, the Botanical Wave takes the brand’s buildable flowers beyond the vase and into a public art installation.

Inside, visitors can add their own creations to a separate digital landscape.

The ‘Where Blooms Begin’ experience invites people to build a LEGO flower, scan it and watch it become a digital bloom alongside those made by other visitors.

As more flowers join, they form a moving floral flow that echoes the physical wave outside.

It gives visitors something to make as well as photograph, turning the building process itself into part of the attraction.

The exhibition also includes Bloom Gallery, featuring 18 LEGO Botanical arrangements and 18 artworks created by artists and adult LEGO fans.

Following its Formula 1 metro takeover in Shanghai, LEGO is again using the city to show what its products can become at an unexpected scale.

The LEGO Bloom Exhibition runs at Tank Shanghai Art Center from 1–29 October 2026.
