Why a Finnish supermarket is now listed on Tripadvisor

Finnish grocery chain K-Supermarket has become the first in the world to list multiple stores on Tripadvisor, positioning supermarket shopping as a legitimate food tourism experience.

The move is rooted in a genuine product truth.

Every K-Supermarket is run by an independent retailer who tailors its range to local tastes — one store keeps rooftop beehives producing its own honey, another stocks an extensive range of local craft beers, while others specialise in regional berries, fish and nearby dairy cheeses.

Across the K Group estate, around 50,000 to 60,000 products come from local and small-scale producers.

The campaign directly addresses a gap identified by Visit Finland’s international food tourism research: Finnish food culture sparks genuine curiosity among international travellers — particularly Germans and Japanese visitors — but awareness remains limited.

The campaign was created by United Imaginations.

Grocery stores, the research suggests, could become a significant new draw for Finnish tourism.

Milla Sorsakivi, Marketing Director for K-Supermarket, says: “Travellers can enjoy an authentic local experience right in a grocery store.”

The first phase covers three Helsinki-area stores, with a national rollout to follow.

It sits within a broader experiential marketing trend of supermarkets turning routine retail into something worth travelling for.

Earlier this year the chain created one of the longest and most boring adverts in Europe – 12 hours worth of customer reviews read straight to camera.
