Aldi brings Specialbuys swagger to the Hawaiian shirt

Aldi is marking the start of BBQ season with limited-edition Hawaiian shirts inspired by its best-loved Specialbuys.

The supermarket, with agency Taylor Herring, is leaning into the revival of “dad fashion” with a nationwide competition giving shoppers the chance to win one of its new summer shirts.

The designs feature a knowingly Aldi mix of warm-weather essentials, from BBQs and hedge trimmers to fishing kit and DIY tools.

The launch comes as Aldi’s research suggests Britain is ready to dress for the grill.

Nearly three quarters of people say they reach for a Hawaiian shirt as soon as the sun appears, while the Early May Bank Holiday has been named by Brits as the moment BBQ season officially begins.

Once-mocked wardrobe choices are also having a broader comeback.

Some 43% of Brits say they now embrace styles once considered unfashionable, with younger audiences drawn to dad-core for its fun, ironic appeal. Cardigans, bucket hats, bum bags and dad trainers all make the list of returning favourites, while 39% believe Hawaiian shirts are back in style.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said the shirts were a natural fit, adding that Aldi’s outdoor Specialbuys are already “a hit with customers”.
