Monzo steps out of shot so life can take centre stage

Monzo has launched ‘Get busy living’, its first global brand platform, built around ten single-shot films that gently push banking into the background.

Directed by Daniel Wolfe and narrated by Olivia Colman, it is the digital bank’s biggest integrated campaign to date.

Each film follows a small, ordinary moment, sneaking home after a date, singing along in a van, set to tracks including Wheatus’s Teenage Dirtbag and The Who’s Baba O’Riley.

Monzo appears only briefly, in the corner of the screen, as features like Salary Sorter and Joint Accounts handle the financial admin unseen.

The push spans TV, cinema, radio, social and a major out of home takeover, and introduces Monzo’s first sonic identity, developed with Sonicbrand from the mmm, zzz and ooo sounds in its own name.

BBH London created the work, whose recent Audi BRIT Awards campaign took a similarly understated approach, alongside Monzo’s in-house studio, NUSA Studios and Starcom, continuing Monzo’s run of unconventional financial services marketing since last year’s Coventry City kit stunt.

AJ Coyne, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Monzo, said: “For too long, the default state of banking has left people feeling like money is just something that happens to them. Today, customers trust us with more of their financial lives than ever before, and get busy living reflects that evolution.”

With 15 million customers now banking with Monzo, the campaign marks its shift from fintech challenger to established name, betting that trust in financial services is best earned by staying out of the way.
