Back Market takes aim at tech updates with Downgrade Now

By on Thursday, April 16, 2026

Back Market has launched ‘Downgrade Now’, a new integrated spring campaign that pushes back against the endless pressure to upgrade.

Running across TV, VOD, OOH, social and audio, the campaign presents the refurbished tech brand as a more human alternative to a culture shaped by optimisation and algorithmic sameness.

Rather than focus on specs, it leans into a wider creative and cultural mood, tapping growing fatigue with generic AI-generated work and flat B2B messaging.

Across London and Birmingham, six rotating executions parody everything from surreal AI imagery to overblown tech language. One shows an iPhone displaying an AI-generated muscular frog alongside the line “Scroll past the slop, for less”.

Another puts an iPad and Apple Pencil behind the message “Do hand stuff”, while a PlayStation 5 execution reads: “Your boss can’t ping you here.”

Daniel Brill, executive creative director at Back Market, said the campaign responds to a moment when “the simple human benefits of tech” are being crowded out by constant AI updates and what he calls “slop”.

The UK rollout is part of a wider push across the US, France, Spain and Germany, marking a confident move from Back Market as it challenges both category norms and the tone of modern tech marketing.
