IKEA turns its April Fools’ gag into a real meatball lollipop

IKEA is bringing one of its strangest food ideas to life, with a limited-edition meatball-flavoured lollipop set to land in stores this June.

What began as an April Fools’ Day joke has become an actual collaboration with Chupa Chups, after the concept drew an enthusiastic reaction online.

The sweet takes the flavour of IKEA’s famously familiar Swedish meatballs and gives it the unmistakable Chupa Chups treatment.

The idea first appeared in a joint Instagram post on 1 April, pitched as “the sweetest mashup no one asked for, but everyone will want to taste”.

Judging by the response, plenty of people were curious enough to see it happen.

Javier Quiñones, commercial manager at Ingka Group, said the team felt compelled to take the idea further after seeing how warmly it was received. He described the launch as a playful celebration of food and a reminder that even a throwaway joke can become something that connects with people.

For Chupa Chups, the appeal lay in reworking one of IKEA’s most recognisable flavours in an unexpected format. Global marketing manager Martin Hofling said the brand was immediately intrigued by the brief, calling the lollipop a playful tribute to a taste closely associated with IKEA around the world.
