Lime turns the promo code into a rider safety pledge

Lime is turning the throwaway promo code into a cycling safety tool with “Promise Codes”, a campaign that hands riders free minutes for typing out a written safety pledge in the Lime app.

Running from today across out-of-home sites in London, Birmingham and Milton Keynes, each code doubles as a redeemable promise that unlocks free time once entered.

Created by The Or, the work rests on a simple behavioural insight: people are more likely to honour a commitment they have physically written down.

So instead of lecturing riders, it leans on humour, with pledges such as “I promise to ride under the influence of whimsical summer vibes only” and a line about sharing the road the way you share picky bits in the park.

Codes are tailored to local riding behaviours, with guerrilla stickers in bike baskets and creator partnerships spreading them further. Media is by Stitchy.

It continues Lime’s run of culturally-led UK work, following its witty Tube takeover during last year’s strike and an earlier stunt spotlighting London’s missing bike parking.

“As a key player in the UK cycling community, we have a responsibility to promote safe cycling behaviour,” said Ellie Bird, Senior Communications and Brand Manager at Lime.

The Or’s Paulo Salomao added that promo codes were “an untapped creative opportunity”, asking why a code cannot be entertaining to read and redeem.
