This crosswalk in Istanbul visualises a decade of pedestrian deaths

Pedestrian crossings are meant to signal safety.

But in Turkey, they’re often sites of tragedy where cars don’t stop and chaos reigns.

Over the last ten years, more than 20,000 people have been killed or injured at crosswalks across the country.

In response, Tuzla Municipality in Istanbul has turned a crosswalk into a sobering piece of street-level data design.

The “Stop at the Crosswalk, Stop the Accidents” project transforms a standard zebra crossing into a data visualization accident stats etched directly onto the asphalt.

Created in partnership with Concept Advertising Agency.

It’s not subtle, and that’s the point. Drivers can’t miss the message: this isn’t just a place to cross, it’s a site where lives have been lost.
