Mattel has unveiled a new addition to its Barbie Fashionistas line, featuring the first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes.
The doll includes realistic medical devices such as a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, and wears a blue polka dot outfit inspired by global diabetes awareness symbols.
Developed in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D, the doll is designed to reflect the lived experience of people with type 1 diabetes.
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, said: “By reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we ensure more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.”
The launch includes donations to Breakthrough T1D’s Children’s Congress in Washington, DC, where young people with T1D meet with members of Congress to raise awareness.
Barbie also honoured two advocates living with the condition Peloton instructor Robin Arzón and UK model Lila Moss with personalised dolls.
Arzón introduced the new doll at Peloton Studios New York, while Moss expressed appreciation for seeing a Barbie that visibly represents her experience.
This release follows other inclusive Barbie dolls, including models with Down syndrome, hearing aids, and vitiligo.
The Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes is now available at Mattel Shop and retailers across the country.
