The Alzheimer’s Society recently launched a powerful campaign called “Behind Closed Doors” to raise awareness about the harsh realities of living with dementia. The installation, located at London’s Southbank, offers an immersive experience, allowing visitors to see and hear real stories from those affected by dementia.
This campaign is not only a tribute to those living with dementia but also a call to action for better support as family caregivers are often left overwhelmed and unsupported. The Alzheimer’s Society aims to push the UK government and decision-makers to prioritise dementia care. With 1 million people currently affected in the UK, and that number expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040, the need for increased awareness and action has never been more urgent.
The installation was supported by TV presenter Anna Richardson, whose father suffers from vascular dementia. She emphasised the emotional toll the disease takes on families and the importance of hope for the future.
“Coping with my dad’s dementia is the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. We all deserve a better future, we all need hope,” she shared.
Through this campaign, the Alzheimer’s Society is not only highlighting personal experiences but also aiming to shift public perception and government policy towards better care for those affected by this life-altering condition.
Alzheimer’s Society CEO Kate Lee said: “Dementia is the biggest health and social care issue of our time. Its devastation reaches families in every corner of the UK and yet it isn’t the priority it needs to be.”
“At least a third of people living with dementia don’t have a diagnosis and are therefore unable to access the vital care, support and treatments they desperately need.”
