How a Bloody Mary could help end period poverty

The UK’s biggest-ever brunch is back on March 3rd and this year, it’s bigger than ever.

New research released this week reveals over a quarter of women and girls throughout the country have been unable to afford menstrual products, with more than a third of those bleeding through most days of their period and 26% missing school or work.

Having already helped over 5,000 women gain access to period products through brunch events in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Bloody Big Brunch, set up by PR company WIRE, is this year asking people to host their own brunch at home and serve Bloody (or Virgin) Marys to friends and family.

But there’s one string attached – and it doesn’t come at the end of a tampon. Guests must pay for their drinks with period products, which can be purchased through Hey Girls, who will automatically double donations and distribute products to charities around the UK including The Red Box Project, Bloody Good Period, Girlguiding Scotland, YWCA and Freedom4Girls.

Backed by Asda, Hey Girls, Stacey Solomon, Amika George, Grace Woodward and a host of other personalities, it’s hoped thousands of people up and down the country will get involved and help end period poverty for good.
