Virgin Holidays sent Lions squad absentees Wilkinson and Robshaw free tickets to Australia

By on Friday, May 3, 2013

Having been passed over for inclusion in this summer’s British and Irish Lions rugby tour to Australia, England openside and captain Chris Robshaw has every right to feel hard done -by. Talismanic fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, who kicked all the points in Toulon’s recent Heineken Cup semi-final win over Saracens, was also a good outside bet to make the squad.

Given the Lions is just once every four years, it could be argued that, with nothing to build for, it makes sense to take somebody with his experience and proven ability. Head coach Warren Gatland told TalkSport that Wilkinson said he was unable to commit due to Toulon’s remaining games.

Riding the crest of (English) public sentiment, Virgin Holidays has offered a free holiday to Australia for the duo just ‘in case’, tweeting the following, in a good quick and dirty piggybacking opportunity well taken:

Sorry you’re not #lions2013 @JonnyWilkinson @ChrisRobshaw. We’ll take you to Oz in case they need your #Rugby #Mojo

Personally I’d be surprised if, given the number of injuries Lions squads usually suffer, the pair didn’t play some part anyway.
