A low-tech display that heritage sites should copy

By on Tuesday, May 12, 2026

A transparent display panel at a medieval fortress in Serbia is drawing admiration online.

The installation at Kruševac Fortress, a 14th-century fortified complex in central Serbia, uses a printed architectural reconstruction on an acrylic panel, positioned so that the illustration aligns precisely with the surviving ruins behind it.

Stand in the right spot, and the crumbling tower is made whole again — no smartphone, no QR code, no augmented reality headset required.

A photograph of the display, shared on Reddit, has been circulating widely, drawing praise from architects, historians, and cultural heritage professionals.

The appeal is straightforward: it works for every visitor, regardless of age, language, or technical literacy.

The display was produced by a local cultural association and supported by Erste Bank.
