Barnam’s Animals Crackers finally freed from cages in major redesign

You might notice something different about the famous Barnam’s Animals Crackers if you pick up a box today, as the Mondelez owned snack has undergone a dramatic redesign.

After over 100 years of confinement the animals gracing the cover of the packaging have finally been “freed” following a letter from PETA demanding their release.

The original packaging featured four animals, constrained behind the bars of the circus’ boxcar cages. PETA, in a letter to the manufacturer Nabisco and Monzelez back in 2016, implored the food giant to remove the bars from the packet and take a stand against “the egregious cruelty inherent in circuses that use animals and the public’s swelling opposition to the exploitation of animals used for entertainment.”

Jason Levine, Mondelēz’s chief marketing officer for North America said: “When PETA reached out about Barnum’s, we saw this as another great opportunity to continue to keep this brand modern and contemporary”. In the major redesign the animals are now free to roam the open plains all together (let’s just hope the Lion isn’t hungry).
