Volkswagen is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its GTI with a new campaign from Bernbach that traces the car’s enduring place in British culture through the memories of the people who have loved it.

The centrepiece is a 60-second film, 50 Years of Pure Passion, which follows the evolution of the GTI from the original Mk1 launched in 1976 to the anniversary Golf GTI Edition 50.

Told through the eyes of fans across five decades, the story begins with a young girl watching her father arrive home in a new GTI and ends with a new generation discovering the latest model, while also hinting at the future with the ID. Polo GTI.

Alongside the changing models, the film celebrates the design details that have defined every era, from the GTI badge and tartan trim to cassette decks, CD players and distinctive gear knobs.

Directed by Billy Boyd Cape through Academy Films, the visual style also evolves with the decades, recreating the look of home movies, camcorder footage, disposable cameras and modern social content.

Running across cinema, television, VOD and social until October, the campaign also highlights the GTI’s devoted fanbase, featuring a wedding car, a GTI tattoo and owners spanning generations.

User-generated content from enthusiasts is woven throughout, reinforcing the model’s lasting appeal.
