The Guardian remakes its most iconic ad, 40 years on
The Guardian has remade of Points of View, its most celebrated piece of advertising, filmed 40 years after the original aired and on the same street in Elephant & Castle where it was shot.
The original (directed by Paul Weiland in 1986) used a simple visual trick to make its argument: the same scene shown from different angles told entirely different stories.
The remake, created with Lucky Generals, returns to that mechanic and to that street, with Weiland and members of the original crew back on the project.
Comedian Kathy Burke, who appeared in the original, also returns.
The campaign launches on the Guardian’s 205th birthday, and its message is deliberately unchanged.
“The Guardian’s iconic Points of View TV advert set out the risks of misunderstanding when judging something from a narrow perspective,” said Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief. “In an age of polarisation, that issue has only become more relevant.”
The campaign runs across video, social, YouTube and Guardian-owned channels, with further phases planned throughout the year.
