LEGO turns Shanghai’s commute into a Formula 1 race

LEGO China has transformed Shanghai’s Metro Line 11 into a Formula 1-themed train to celebrate the return of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Created by OLA (Our LEGO Agency), the brand’s in-house creative team in China, the activation turns the metro line that connects downtown Shanghai with the Shanghai International Circuit into a moving tribute to the sport.

From the outside, the train appears as a full-length Formula 1 car racing through the city, effectively turning the daily commute into an underground race track.

The campaign also nods to another rail icon. Chongqing’s famous Line 2 train, known for passing directly through a residential building, has been playfully reimagined as an F1 train, extending the racing illusion from subterranean tunnels to the skyline.

Inside the carriages, commuters step into LEGO-built Formula 1 team pit garages.

Fans can spot more than 20 hidden Easter eggs designed for sharing online, from Roscoe’s paw prints to a T-pose George Russell minifigure that devoted followers will recognise instantly.

The experience continues at the station, where moments from Formula 1 history have been recreated using 550,000 LEGO bricks.

The installation forms part of LEGO’s global Build the Thrill campaign celebrating Formula 1 fandom.
