LEGO’s latest drop is a nostalgic flex with a brick-built Game Boy

LEGO and Nintendo are tapping into handheld history with a new 421-piece set that recreates the iconic 1989 Game Boy – at true-to-life scale.
The set (priced $59.99) brings a retro handheld into the world of studs and plates, complete with functioning buttons, cartridge slots, and two buildable Game Paks: Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
There’s even a lenticular screen that swaps between scenes and mimics that legendary Game Boy boot-up.
This isn’t LEGO’s first Nintendo team-up but this one goes all-in on lo-fi gaming nostalgia, targeting the shelf space of Gen X and millennial fans who once hunched over green-tinted screens.
Alongside this Lego took this opportunity to make a spoof of the original Game Boy commercial from 1989 – directed by the one and only Klaus Spendser.
As brands continue to remix classic IP in buildable form (see also: Adidas Originals, Fender Stratocaster), LEGO’s brick-by-brick throwback is out on Oct 1.
