Activists crash Bezos wedding with giant Venice banner

Greenpeace Italy and UK activist group Everyone Hates Elon dropped a 20×20 metre banner in Piazza San Marco that read “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax,” just as Jeff Bezos is set to host his high-profile wedding in the lagoon city.
The banner action was aimed at drawing attention to billionaire wealth and tax justice, using the media attention around Bezos as a backdrop.
“As governments talk about hard choices and struggle to fund public services, Jeff Bezos can afford to shut down half a city for days on end just to get married,” said a spokesperson from Everyone Hates Elon. “If there was ever a sign billionaires like Bezos should pay wealth taxes, it’s this.”
Greenpeace campaigner Clara Thompson added, “While Venice is sinking under the weight of the climate crisis, billionaires are partying like there is no tomorrow on their mega yachts. This isn’t just about one person — it’s about changing the rules so no billionaire can dodge responsibility, anywhere.”
It’s not the first time activist groups have used cultural events to make a statement.
The campaign recalls similar moments from Greenpeace’s long history of protest visuals, and Everyone Hates Elon’s recent stunts targeting space billionaires and tax loopholes. This one lands directly in the middle of wedding season – and a climate emergency.
