Aldi shelves period poverty as first UK supermarket to offer free products

Aldi has made a bloody good move for menstrual equity!

Yesterday, Aldi became the first UK supermarket to offer free period products in it’s in-store toilets – no secret code, loyalty card, or awkward checkout scan required.

The initiative aims to help combat period poverty, which affects 41% of people who menstruate – forcing many to choose between tampons and basic groceries.

Proving it’s commitment, Aldi is also teaming up with leading menstrual equity charity, Bloody Good Period, donating a whopping 1 million period products to help those in need.

Backed by broadcaster and BGP ambassador Clara Amfo, the initiative underscores a crucial message: period products aren’t a luxury (unlike their tax bracket), they’re a necessity.

With so many struggling to access sanitary products – often resorting to makeshift solutions like toilet paper – Aldi’s move is a game-changer and a first for a major UK retailer.

Chief Commercial Officer Julie Ashfield said: “We never want our customers to have to choose between buying the period products they need and feeding themselves or their families. For millions of people across the country, having access to period products is a basic and essential need, and we believe the provision of these in public toilets is as vital as toilet paper and soap.”
