London pub launches ‘Fair Pour’ to highlight income inequality

By on Thursday, January 16, 2025

This January, a unique pop-up pub will open its doors to patrons with an intriguing twist – pay what you believe is fair for your pint, based on how much you earn.

The Fair Pour, organised by Oxfam, aims to draw attention to the growing divide between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of society, coinciding with the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The event will take place on January 21 at The Queen’s Head, a cozy pub on Theobalds Road, from noon to 9 pm.

The campaign cleverly uses the cost of a pint in London – which now averages around £8 – to spotlight the increasing disparity between income groups.

The concept is simple: those who can afford to, are encouraged to pay more to reflect their wealth.

Oxfam’s message is clear: a fairer distribution of resources, including a progressive tax system, could fund essential services like healthcare, education, and climate protection, helping to reduce inequality worldwide. In fact, the charity points out that if billionaires paid just a little bit more in taxes, it could have a massive impact on improving lives globally.

Though how Oxfam plans to assess your net worth before you order is anyone’s guess, it’s safe to assume that the wealthier you are, the pricier your drink will be. So, if you’re worth billions don’t expect a bargain – your drink could set you back around £100! For those of us who don’t quite make the billionaire grade, there will still be plenty of affordable options.

Kelly Mundy, Senior Campaigns Manager, Oxfam commented: “Wealth inequality is the shocking reality of our society, and a reality that’s worsening every year. It’s time for bold solutions like progressive taxation and investment in public services to create a more equal playing field. The Fair Pour pub highlights the urgent need for action to create a fairer world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We hope it encourages people to think about how a fairer tax system could create a more just society for everyone.”
