The History Boy: @WayneRooney

To celebrate Rooney’s 100th cap for England on Saturday, William Hill convincingly photoshopped images of the footballer as many of the nation’s greatest figures including Churchill, Nelson and King Henry 8th.

The images got picked up across some of the nationals and the MailOnline although I couldn’t help thinking this was very similar to a picture stunt Sky Sports did in August to launch Sky’s new channel dedicated to European football, Sky Sports 5. The channel opened a gallery featuring a range of portraits depicting Europe’s best footballers in the style of their country’s most famous painters.

Could this mean for guaranteed coverage of sports launches, your best bet is to commission ‘old/new portraits’ of famous footballers… Its only a matter of time until one sports brand or betting website blows up a giant portrait of a footballer and places it at Potters Fields.
