The Catherine McEwan Foundation aim to flush away the stigma with purple portaloo installation

The Catherine McEwan Foundation have installed a purple portaloo in Glasgow to spotlight inflammatory bowel disease, challenging perceptions and amplifying voices often overshadowed by chronic illness.

Strolling past SWG3 in Glasgow, you might spot a purple portaloo that demands more than just a quick glance. This isn’t your everyday festival fixture, it’s a clever awareness drive by the Catherine McEwan Foundation, crafted with MadeBrave.

Installed on World IBD Day, the portaloo aims to shed light on the hush-hush reality of living with IBD, reminding us that sometimes people are stuck inside because their body just says no…

From the outside, it’s pure festival camouflage. Step inside, though, and you’re greeted with a cinema-style seat, walls sprinkled with jaw-dropping stats, and a poignant film featuring DJ George Bowie, Callum Beattie, Robyn Red, and Starsailor.

“We created this space to help people stop, think, and understand. For some, a festival loo is something to avoid. For others, it’s the reason they miss out entirely.”

With over 1 in 100 Scots living with IBD, the campaign aims to challenge misconceptions, smash stigma, and advocate for those sidelined by this shadowy disease.
