Shell targeted as Greenpeace rebrands Tube stations during heatwave

Greenpeace has temporarily renamed several London Underground stations in a protest designed to connect the UK’s record-breaking heatwave with the fossil fuel industry.

Using stickers placed over existing station signs, campaigners transformed Baker Street into “Baking Street”, Tottenham Court Road into “Hottenham Court Road”, and London Bridge into “London’s Burning”.

Each altered sign was accompanied by the message: “Heatwave, sponsored by Shell.”

The stunt turns some of the capital’s most recognisable transport landmarks into a highly visible creative canvas, using wordplay and familiar locations to draw attention to the organisation’s climate campaign.

By intervening in a space used by millions of commuters, Greenpeace sought to link rising temperatures with the role of major oil and gas companies in driving emissions.

The action coincides with one of the most intense periods of hot weather the UK has experienced. On Thursday, the country recorded its hottest June day on record, with temperatures reaching 36.7C in Gosport, Hampshire.

The figure surpassed the previous June record of 36.1C, which had been set only a day earlier.
