Crown Jewels installation spotlights testicular cancer

The OddBalls Foundation has launched a tongue-in-cheek installation featuring a jewel-encrusted pair of “Crown Jewels” to get men talking about testicular cancer and the importance of regular self-checks.

Unveiled in London for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, the sculpture presents a sparkling pair on a velvet cushion inside a museum-style glass case, complete with curator’s notes.

Created by mixed media artist Quentin Devine, the piece took two months to make and features more than 500 hand-set crystal stones.

The campaign by Taylor Herring uses humour to open up a subject many men still avoid.

New research commissioned by the charity found that four in ten British male adults do not know the key symptoms of testicular cancer, while more than half rarely or never check themselves.

Kieran Kelly, managing director at The OddBalls Foundation, said: “Our campaign aims to spark a national conversation and save lives by using humour to tackle a topic many men still avoid.”

The installation will now tour universities, shopping centres and sporting venues throughout April, before appearing as part of the charity’s summer programme, where visitors can learn more about symptoms and how to check themselves.
