Tourism New Zealand has partnered with Minecraft to add its stunning landscapes to the game, aiming to generate $50 million in visitor spending!
In a move to boost post-Covid tourism, six iconic Kiwi destinations like Waitomo Caves and Abel Tasman National Park are being transformed into virtual playgrounds free to explore in the game.
The campaign coincides with the release of the Minecraft Movie, starring Jason Momoa, filmed right in the heart of New Zealand.
This isn’t just a digital adventure; it’s a cultural dive, kicking off with a welcome on a marae, designed by the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. With activities that mirror real-world experiences, like paddling a waka or stargazing, players are getting a digital taste of New Zealand’s magic.
Beyond fun, it’s educational, promoting sustainable travel in partnership with Tiaki – Care for New Zealand.
“The tribal groups from here Ngāti Rārua, Te Āti Awa and Ngāti Tama also have a presence and a voice and generally that doesn’t happen and it just feels like a wonderful turning point and a big mihi (thanks) to Minecraft, Tourism New Zealand and the other businesses that collaborated to create this, because it was exceptional interaction and engagement.”
So, gear up, explorers—New Zealand’s virtual landscapes are calling!
