These hilarious Chilean beer ads from 2004 have gone viral

Twenty years ago, OMD Santiago pulled off a media first.

They persuaded TV Channel 13 in Chile to allow ads for Cereza Cristal beer to be spliced into a series of famous movies rather than cutting to commercial breaks.

Clips circulating on social media see characters from famous franchises breaking away from scenes and grabbing a cold beer.

In this dubbed version the famous kryptonite reveal scene from Superman takes on a whole new meaning.

Then there’s Star Wars version in which Obi-Wan Kenobi hands Luke Skywalker a cold beer instead of his father’s lightsaber.

The series of commercials was made for the Compañía de Cervecerías Unidas (CCU) by  OMD Chile and Efex.

At the time Felipe Wielandt, brand manager who commissioned the campaign (‘La Fuerza es con Cerveza Cristal’), pointed out that the campaign sought to “reach increasingly distant consumers”

The briefcase scene from Pulp Fiction takes on a whole new meaning.

In June 2004, The Force is with Cerveza Cristal won the Media Grand Prix at Cannes Lions – the first time that a Chilean company bagged a lion.

This week X account @Heyitswindy re-shared the Star wars one which has gained 37M views.

Dune…

The campaign has now taken on new life – with fans of the ads creating their own memes.
