The Best ’50 Shades of Grey’ PR Examples

By on Wednesday, February 18, 2015

50 Shades Of Grey has beaten all box office records in the UK, and in the past few weeks almost every brand has jumped onto the bandwagon with either a play on the words or the nature of the film. There have been some brilliant PR stunts seen on platforms like Twitter and Facebook and I’m going to share the very best here.

1 | Mr Squarepants Will See You Now…

The Spongebob Squarepants movie was releasing two weeks prior to the release of 50 Shades Of Grey and they decided to use one of the most famous and memorable lines from the trailer creating a brilliant poster and merging two worlds you wouldn’t expect to see together!

2 | Durex Reality, it’s better than fiction…
Ofcourse it would make sense for Durex to be linked to the movies, but their new advert played on 50 Shades brilliantly. Urging fans to put books down and go live their fantasies out because nothing beats reality!

3 | This Morning’s Morning Bondage Class
ITV’s daily show had a whole section of their show just to go over ‘Bondage For Beginners – A Masterclass‘ and it caused a massive uproar, being talked all over social media and generating complaints to Ofcom, not to forget being covered in all the papers. Job well done, that too by 10am on Tuesday morning.

4 | B&Q Tells Staff To Read 50 Shades of Grey
Very smart PR Stunt by B&Q where a memo to staff was ‘leaked’ on the web telling staff to expect a soar in demand for cable ties and ropes and customers asking sensitive questions. Hence in preparation they should read the book and copies will be sent to all the stores for staff to borrow. Just brilliant!

5| Fifty Shades of Kale: 50 Fresh and Satisfying Recipes That Are Bound to Please

From the teddies, to the lingeries ranges, we definitely weren’t expecting this. An excerpt about the book; ‘Release yourself from the bondage of guilt and start cooking meals with the ingredients you love: meat, cheese, and yes—even butter. Nutrient-rich kale provides essential vitamins and minerals to keep you healthy, happy, and lean—so you can indulge in your most delicious desires. Whether you’re a cooking novice or a real kale submissive, you will undoubtedly succumb to Kale’s charms.’ This book is actually doing surprisingly well, and it was a great PR stunt for the couple.

There have been many other brilliant brand tie ins with 50 Shades of Grey from the Lego Trailer, to Marmite, 50 Shades of Greyhound, Trojan’s Parody, Twinnings ‘The Earl Grey‘ and Dominos to mention a few more, so make sure you check them out.
