Credit Card Company and League Cup sponsor Capital One demonstrated their ongoing commitment to ‘supporting the supporters’, by stepping in to help Shrewsbury Town FC break the 10,000 capacity barrier for the first time.
Ahead of the clubs biggest League Cup fixture since 1961, Capital One provided financial help to fund temporary seating split evenly across the South East and South West corners of the stadium – allowing an extra 486 Shrews fans to enjoy the ‘David vs. Goliath clash’ in Round 4 of the Capital One Cup.
Capital One spotted the opportunity to help after a news story in the Shropshire Star back in September revealed the club were desperate to make the game accessible to as many fans as possible.
Reacting to the news agenda, Capital One contacted the club to pledge their financial support, and Shrewsbury FC duly accepted. Not only did an extra 486 fans get to see the match, but the additional seating provided the League Two side with a cash boost, driven by an increase in ticket sales and match day revenue.
Capital One’s support struck the right chord with the football world, including players, fans, and media. National media, including The Sun and the Daily Mail referenced Capital One’s role in the capacity increase in their match previews, and significantly, Sky Sports acknowledged Capital One’s gesture live on air during the game!
The game itself lived up to expectations, with resilient Shrewsbury Town pushing Jose Mourinho’s side all the way. Despite eventually losing 2-1, there’s no doubt the roar of the extra 486 fans played its part in a memorable night for the club.
