A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY…

DUHHHH! DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH! DUN DUN DUN, DUNNN DUNNN DUNN DUN DUN!

*fades to scrolling text*

…It is a period of civil PR war; public opinion has won a minor victory over the ratty bearded Darth Lucas, landing a blow against tepid prequels, tedious fan-fiction and run-of-the-mill merchandising with the launch of ‘Lightsaber Thumb Wars’.

During the battle, in which the jobs of many rebel product developers no doubt perished, the Lucasfilm empire’s latest manuscript comes in the form of very simple, and rather wonderful, Chronicle Book. In a move away from hi-tech video-game and merchandise design, the book has had two thumb-sized holes bored into it – through which a reader may place their digits and engage in an updated version of an old-fashioned thumb war.

Accompanying said book comes two rather magnificent red and blue mini light-sabers for two opponents to Velcro to their thumbs to do battle against an array of classic Star Wars backdrops – ranging from the excellent Cloud City to the reactor and fire pits from the final sequences in (the deeply dull) Revenge of the Sith.

A very simple, clever and most of all cheap piece of product design, Lightsaber Thumb Wars presents a great piece of tongue-in-cheek PR for which Lucasfilm is traditionally lacking. Currently on sale in the USA for around $12.99 and £7 in the UK , the product is currently doing the rounds on many of the digital review and trend sites, as well as being shared socially to great effect for the brand.

So, with Xmas not far, far away, and JJ Abraham’s imminent films already whetting fan boys’ appetites the world over, it’s only a matter of time until the UK’s playgrounds, parks and grown up offices are awash with a kitsch game that plays on our enduring passion for the force.
