Argos Aliens ask Twitter users to name their new baby
By Alex Mansell on Wednesday, June 26, 2013
Argos has come up with a great social media stunt to play on the success of their popular Alien characters, by asking Tweeters to come up with the name of the latest addition to the family.
A TV ad launches today announcing the birth of the new baby (bizarrely it’s the dad that is pregnant – attempt at being quirky-funny?).
At the end we get to see the wide-eyed arrival, and the hashtag #NameOurBaby appears. Anyone in the Twitterverse is free to make a name suggestion, and the Aliens’ favourite will go to a vote. The winning suggestion will be announced on a TV ad on 29th June.
The Alien family last week launched their own Twitter handle, @ArgosAliens, which has seen some great interaction, with some posts receiving hundreds of retweets.
A nice, simple social media campaign that really does the job when it comes to public engagement. What’s really good about this idea is that it draws on the current hype surrounding the royal baby, and allows normal people a degree of control over the naming of a public figure, which we are of course denied with Kate & Wills’ little one.
Steve Parker, partner at The Social Practice, said: “There’s already a lot of warmth and conversation about the Argos ads on Twitter, so we wanted to deepen this engagement by inviting viewers and users to get involved in shaping the story of our alien family in a truly dynamic way. ”
