New virtual reality campaign allows public to face All Blacks’ haka

I’ve just stared down the haka – using nothing more than my iPhone and a cheap Google Cardboard headset we have lying around the office. Sadly, that’s as close as I’ll ever get to it, but I have to say – it’s a decent second-best.

Haka VR campaign

In light of the upcoming Rugby World Cup, All Blacks sponsor AIG has launched a 360 degree app – giving the viewer the chance to be ‘on the field’ with the New Zealand players as they perform the traditional pre-match Māori ritual, the haka.

The Haka 360˚ Experience is available to download via the App Store or Google Play (and is apparently coming to the Gear VR Share Store soon).

To combat the issues of public accessibility inherent in virtual reality campaigns, AIG is giving away more than 1,000 ‘Haka 360º’ headsets (basically, branded Google Cardboard units) in a bid to get the app in front of more people (to request one, visit this page). Also, visitors to the AIG Touchline on the South Bank in London can see it throughout September and October.

The app also includes AIG’s ‘history of the haka’ video, produced in consultation with Ngati Toa, guardians of the Ka Mate haka. The campaign video, which has been viewed more than 270,000 times, can seen here:
