It’s a tough job fighting against a rival that is voted ‘the world’s coolest brand’ , but Nokia put in a sterling effort to poke fun at Apple with a simple tweet that has gone down as one of the most retweeted brand tweets ever.
Earlier this month Apple dedicated its efforts to launching its new colourful iPhones, which broke the standard black and white pattern consumers have come to expect.

Nokia essentially accused Apple of copying its Lumia smartphone, which features a similar design and is available in a number of colours, by tweeting ‘Thanks #Apple’ from the Nokia account, accompanied by a winking emoticon and the words ‘Imitation is the best form of flattery’.
The tweet has gone viral, acquiring an astonishing 38,000 retweets, and, according to The Drum, a Twitter staffer has confirmed that this puts it in the top echelons of marketing tweets in the site’s history.
The power of Twitter is revealed once more as the golden and much-sought-after ‘viral’ effect is unleashed. Brands are learning that a tongue in cheek approach that relates to the user is incredibly effective, and in this instance print coverage is less important – though the story has been picked up by Metro nonetheless. Can’t complain!
