Dubai authorities offer gold in return for weight loss

Yes you read that right – when my colleague first told me about this, I assumed it was a joke. But apparently authorities in Dubai really are offering for people to swap kilograms of fat for a gram of gold.

The 30 day scheme, called Your Weight in Gold, has been set up to coincide with Ramadan, a month of fasting, and aims to encourage healthier living.

For each kilogram lost, participants will receive a gram of gold, which is currently worth about $45 (£30).

The deal is, you have to lose at least 2kg to gain 2g of gold, then you gain a further gram of gold for each additional kilo you drop within 30 days. The three participants who lose the most weight will be entered into a draw to win a gold coin worth $5,400.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, who launched the scheme, said: “Ramadan is the most appropriate season to launch such initiatives as it reminds us about many health benefits of reducing weight and encourages us to take strong steps to change our bad lifestyles.”

The scheme is being sponsored by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).

So far it’s seen coverage in Huffington Post, BBC Online, and ITV.
