Gingers offered 10% discount this weekend at new shopping centre in Aberdeen

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a stunt for the red of hair (last year, hundreds marched in the UK’s first ever Ginger Pride parade/PR stunt), but this effort just dropped into my inbox and is, I thought, worthy of a quick mention.

An Aberdonian man, Richard MacCrae, was given a handmade discount card as a joke for his 30th birthday. As covered here on The Mirror, the chancer has been whipping the fake card out for a good four years and reckons he’s saved himself a couple of hundred quid on cinema tickets, drinks and taxi rides.

Taking inspiration from the headlines – and showing impressive piggybacking skills, Aberdeen’s newest shopping mall Union Square is letting gingers take advantage of a 10% discount across outlets including Nando’s, Superdry, AB10, Cotswold Outdoor and TM Lewin over the weekend.

Non-gingers can also benefit from the budget-friendly stunt – as long as they arrive in the centre wearing a ginger wig. In order to claim the discount, shoppers need to ask for ‘Ginger Discount’ at the tills of participating retailers – no fake IDs required.

Although a simple play on the often-recycled ‘ban people wearing X item of clothing’ from places (Google Glass being the most recent I can remember), it did make me smile and is one of those no-lose PR efforts. The stunt has already been featured by the likes of STV (and ITV), The Sun and The Daily Record and whether it brings extra cash in or not, it’s all helpful for the new centre.
